Marqués de la Concordia Family of Wines - part of Haciendas de España World

A man of unquestioned talent, he has over 25 years' winemaking experience in some of Spain’s finest wine regions: La Rioja, Rueda, Ribera del Duero, Arribés del Duero, Catalunya, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, etc…

Oenology degree - Carmelo Angulo has an oenology degree from the Rovira & Virgili University (Tarragona).

Career path - Carmelo started his career at Paternina where he worked for 14 years. He has now been working for United Wineries for the past 17 years.

Acievements - Carmelo Angulo was the first winemaker in La Rioja to use new oak barrels to age Crianza wines and the one in the region to be authorised to experiment with the international grape varieties (Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) planted in Hacienda de Susar’s 17 hectares vineyard.

Medals - Carmelo Angulo has won numerous medals since he started his career, for example he won 136 medals for the Concordia family of wines between 2004-2009.

Alma Garcia
Winemaker in charge of the Durius project
Durius Natural Reserve Haciendas de España

Alma Garcia is a young winemaker based at Hacienda Unamuno, the birthplace of Durius wines, located at the very heart of the Parque Natural Arribés del Duero.

She is originally from the town of Fermoselle, the wine capital of the Arribés del Duero region, right on the border between Spain and Portugal.

University degree - Alma has a Masters degree in Chemistry (University of Salamanca), another one in Oenology (University of Valladolid) and a postgraduate Master in Oenology from the University of Valladolid.

Career path - Alma started her career at the Arribés del Duero co-operative in 2001. She has now been working for United Wineries for 6 years.

Achievements - Alma launched the innovative product Durius Natural Reserve. A wine contributing to the Green environmental trend.

Medals - Alma Garcia has won numerous medals since she started her career, for example she won  24 medals for the Durius family of wines between 2004-2009.

José Mª Merino
Master Winemaker
Bodegas Berberana

Winemaker with extended winemaking experience (35 years) born in Fuenmayor, famed for its wine tradition and situated in Rioja Alta.

Oenology degree - José gained a Masters degree in Oenology after studying Viticulture and Oenology in Madrid and Valencia.  

Career path - He started working in Bodegas Lagunilla in 1975 producing and ageing red, rosé and white Rioja wines also supplied by local growers under a strict quality control. In 1995 Bodegas Berberana acquired Bodegas Lagunilla and since then, he has been promoted to Chief Winemaker for Berberana’s country wines from different parts of Spain, preserving always their style and provenance.

Medals - José Maria Merino has won numerous medals since he started his career, for example he has won 92 medals for Berberana’s various wine collections since 2004.

Cavas Marqués de Monistrol

Known as the Maestro of Monistrol, this Catalonia-born winemaker is the man behind our unique cavas and powerful still wines made at the Monistrol d’Anoia cellars. Monistrol is known as The Cava Village, located at the very heart of Cava Country, just 40km away from the city of Barcelona.

Degree - Has a Masters degree in Wine Analysis from Barcelona University and a Masters degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Tarragona.

Career path - Started his career at the Laboratories for Wine Research in Viader and has now been working for United Wineries for 25 years.

Achievements - Antonio pioneered rosé cava. Monistrol was the first on the international market with a rosé cava and is still dominating the market with its successful rosé cavas.

Medals - Antonio has won numerous medals since he started his career, for example he has won 45 medals for the Monistrol wine and cava collections since 2004.

Wines selected for Bodegas de Crianza Marqués de Griñón

High-profile winemaker Don Carlos Falco, known as the "Marqués de Griñon”, is one of the leading lights of Spain's new wine revolution. He was born in Seville and now lives in Madrid.

University degree- Trained in the Flemish city Lovain in Belgium, where he studied Agricultural Engineering and later on he graduated in California.

Career - He presides over Pagos de Familia Marqués de Griñon, the parent company of various wine-producing businesses which he has imbued with his innovative character and prestige.

Achievements - pioneer in initiatives like the elaboration in Spain of international varietals such as Syrah and Petit Verdot, or Cabernet Sauvignon in the region of Castile and La Mancha.  The pioneer Carlos Falco – Marqués de Griñon was the first to introduce the so called semi crianza, a Rioja with shortened ageing. Using the latest winemaking techniques with traditional know-how.

In Memoriam - S.A.S. Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe (+2000)

Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, founder of the internationally renowned Marbella Club, created an outstanding wine from his 37 acres of vineyards near the City of Ronda, at the Andalusian Cortijo de las Monjas (the Nun's Farm).

Achievements - Prince Alfonso brought a selection of vines from France, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, along with a French wine expert. Today his excellent wine competes with the best in the world.

José Di Marco is a young Oenologist but with the experience required for being in charge of our new world wines from Argentina, Mendoza. The Martins wine collection is a range of varietal wines developed for the international market.

University degree - Jose Di Marco has two Oenology degrees in Argentinian winemaking.

Achievements - Has won 12 gold and silver medals since 2004 for the Martins wine collection.
