Berberana Goes Green

Berberana Evergreen Oak Project

Being a Spanish leader brand, Berberana has a commitment to taking a lead role in supporting the environment and developing more sustainable practices in its wine making. Therefore, Berberana plants one tree per each barrel used.

Evergreen project

Conscious of the vital importance of protecting the local ecosystems, Berberana has developed a project fully committed to the preservation of the native tree of the Mediterranean; The Evergreen Oak Tree. Berberana's Evergreen Oak Project aims to plant 60,000 new Evergreen Oak trees by 2012 and will have a direct impact on the preservation of about 200 bird species (some of them endangered), 47 mammal species and 21 reptile species.

The project will be developed in the Arribés del Duero Natural Park, a protected area located on the Spanish-Portugese border. The breathtaking landscapes of this zone inspired many poems by the famous Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno and constitute a national treasure.

The Evergreen Oak tree plays a critical role in the ecosystem of the Arribés del Duero Natural Park. The valley's singular beauty is kept green thanks to the Evergreen Oak which remains green and "live" throughout the whole year and is a shelter to many bird species. In addition to being the birds' home, the acorn nuts produced by the tree are an important source of food for many of the animals in the area.

Furthermore, trees have a key role in reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere; they prevent or reduce soil erosion and water pollution; and help recharge ground water and sustain stream flow.

Berberana is among the few wine producers to start with a project of such great impact.
